Coverage and classification rules
Data as of 8 October 2026. This page explains which research rows are used, and which automatic corrections are applied to the therapy classification. Original source values are never overwritten: every corrected statement keeps its original family and names the rule that changed it.
Research scope
All 16,434 NIH/CORDIS extraction rows were screened using full titles and supplied abstracts. 15,805 project/participation rows remain active; 287 rows outside human scope and 342 rows without an established human or medical link are archived. Twenty unmatched legacy summaries without detailed scope evidence are also archived.
Plant, crop, ecology and coral-only projects do not contribute to the active data. Plant-derived materials with an explicit medical application are retained, as are animal models explicitly related to medical research and mixed projects with a documented medical component.
| Family | R&D dossiers before scope review | After scope review | With a map position |
|---|---|---|---|
| Cell | 1,306 | 1,304 | 996 |
| Gene | 1,688 | 1,563 | 1,386 |
| Tissue | 802 | 780 | 765 |
Families overlap. Coordinates keep the precision of the source; an institution-level position does not locate a laboratory or department.
Classification corrections
Versioned correction table, version 2026-10-10. Figures are evidence statements (one source fact about one place) in the full collection.
| Rule | What it does | Statements |
|---|---|---|
| Named cell products | Sipuleucel-T, lifileucel, posoleucel, tabelecleucel, baltaleucel-T and remestemcel-L are cell therapies, not gene therapies (they are not genetically modified). | 1,500 |
| Non-ATMP terms | Radiation, radiotherapy, radiofrequency ablation, RAD001 (everolimus) and radotinib had been matched through the prefix “rad”. Removed from every ATMP family. | 97 |
| Terms valid only in context | Keratinocyte growth factor (palifermin) is not keratinocytes; drug “spheroids” are not chondrocyte spheroids; “non-cultured” epidermal cells are not a cultured product; lower-case “til” is not TIL; AAV for ANCA-associated vasculitis is not an AAV vector. | 209 |
| Prior treatment only | An ATMP named in a trial title only as the participants’ previous treatment (e.g. “after CAR-T”) does not classify the studied product. | 63 |
| Transplantation and SoHO context | Haematopoietic stem-cell transplantation programmes (JACIE/FACT) and cord-blood (HPC) products are substances of human origin, not ATMPs. Kept in the Atlas under “Transplantation & SoHO context (not ATMP)”, excluded from the Cell family (770 records). | 1,802 |
| Weak R&D keyword matches | Research rows flagged as weak (editing or vector tool terms only, or transplantation terms only) are hidden by default. Option: “Include weak R&D keyword matches”. | 3,848 |
| Countries and regions | Russia, Serbia and Türkiye are in Europe; Central American and Caribbean countries in North America; a Hangzhou hospital recorded in Christmas Island is placed in China. | — |
After correction, 280 statements carry no ATMP family. They stay visible under “Not an ATMP (corrected by rule)”, which is off by default, so that each decision can be checked against its source.
This is a documentary check using explicit text rules, not an independent scientific validation of every project, trial or classification. Families and technologies still require expert review. Grant funding is not proof of manufacturing, treatment availability or complete worldwide coverage.
